Challenges and opportunities for a South America Waterway System

South America has been developed from its coast to hinterlands since the beginning of Western colonization. However, this point, no significant effort made integrate interior. Waterways transportation can be considered most sustainable inland mode due low CO2 emissions per ton cargo transport. With in mind, paper investigates history, challenges and opportunities past proposals for construction Waterway System (SAWS) connecting La Plata, Amazon, Orinoco river basins. It focuses on particular proposed waterway. (i) a comparison between deforestation surrounding existing road waterway infrastructure (ii) large water level variation Amazon basin, (iii) alternatives storing reduce impacts floods droughts We conclude that waterways is practically zero groundwater storage an important role basin reservoirs, limited one. The SAWS significantly foster American integration, encourage extraction natural resources region help conservation forest.
